The first foundling wheel in Italy – 1198

The first wheel was introduced in Italy in 1198, allegedly when Pope Innocent III had been troubled by nightmares of ded bodies trapped in fishing nets in the Tiber. This led him to decree that abandoned babies should be cared for in the Santo Spirito in Sassia hospital that he himself had founded.
