Babies left in the foundling wheel were baptized and added to the house’s register. They were usually named after the saint of the day they were found, whilst the most frequent surnames in Italy were: Esposito, Diotallevi, Diotiguardi, Innocenti and Genito. The foundling wheel was seen by poor families as a primitive form of social assistance.
